Skilled Worker Visa: The Complete Guide

The Skilled Worker visa is the UK's main work route. It lets an employer with a sponsor licence hire someone from outside the resident labour market for an eligible job, and it counts towards settlement after five years.

Who can apply

You need a genuine job offer from a Home Office licensed sponsor for a role on the list of eligible occupations, at the required skill level.

  • A Certificate of Sponsorship from your employer
  • A job at the required skill level (RQF level 3 or above for most roles)
  • A salary that meets both the general threshold and the going rate for the occupation
  • English at CEFR level B2 for new applicants from 8 January 2026 (B1 if you are extending a visa held before then), proven by a test, a degree taught in English, or nationality

Salary and the going rate

Your pay must meet the higher of the general salary threshold and the going rate for your occupation code. Lower thresholds can apply if you are a new entrant, hold a relevant PhD, or the role is on the Immigration Salary List. Use the salary checker to compare an offer against the current figures.

How to apply

  • Your employer assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship
  • You apply online, prove your identity and pay the fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge
  • You show maintenance funds unless your sponsor certifies them

Path to settlement

After five years of continuous residence on the route, paid at or above the settlement salary, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, then British citizenship a year later. Keep your absences within the 180-day rule throughout.
